In 10 seconds? Excess body weight is a growing cause of cancer worldwide. The number of these cancers increased 34% in the last decade! Scientists are working to better understand this issue and come up with solutions.
I guess this is a warning that I should lose a few pounds. Hold up. I’m just sharing insights about a growing area of cancer research and don’t aim to convey any negativity about living with excess body weight (another issue in its own right!). It’s well-established that systemic factors are to blame for increasing rates of excess body weight (like low access to healthy foods and high access to sugar-rich foods. You know sugar is addictive, right?). While weight loss is achievable for some individuals, the most meaningful way to tackle increased cancer mortality caused by obesity is through systemic change (AKA definitely not through self-loathing or judging others!).
