Scientists are simulating a geo-hack to keep the Earth cooler
In 10 seconds? A team of scientists is exploring ways to make the stratosphere reflect more sunlight which could help keep the Earth cooler and reduce the impacts of climate change.
What? How exactly do they plan to apply this climate hack? International scientists led by Cornell University are examining a solar radiation modification (solar geoengineering) technique called stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI). This involves injecting sulfate aerosols into the stratosphere. These aerosols reflect solar radiation into space, preventing it from reaching the Earth’s surface which keeps its temperatures cooler. The aerosols can also lead to an increase in cloud formation which can increase reflectivity, and also temper temperature rises. This technique is somewhat controversial because many scientists believe that injecting pollutants into the atmosphere could be more damaging than good.
