Gene editing plus ultrasound eradicate aggressive liver cancer in mice
In 10 seconds? Scientists have used CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing technology and nanoparticles to make cancer cells sensitive to a therapy that shrunk liver cancer in test animals.
What did they do? They’ve combined the gene-editing technology with a form of targeted radiation therapy knowns as Sonodynamic therapy to stop one of the most aggressive cancers worldwide, Hepatocellular carcinoma (that’s a fancy way of saying liver cancer). Sonodynamic therapy utilizes a low form of radiation in combination with drugs to release ‘reactive oxygen species’ (let’s call it ROS) at the tumor sites.
