Cannabis complications: it may interfere with common drugs

In 10 seconds? New research shows that chemical components found in cannabis alter how your liver processes commonly prescribed or over-the-counter drugs. The health consequences of this interaction have yet to be determined.

What exactly is this drug interaction? Cannabis is the most commonly used and abused drug worldwide. Researchers recently discovered that the three psychoactive components of cannabis – Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and cannabinol (CBN) – inhibit the actions of UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs), a family of enzymes found in the liver that clean our bodies of various drugs and toxins.
