Can electrical brain stimulation restrain out-of-control binge eating?
In 10 seconds? A recent pilot study found that electrical stimulation of a brain region responsible for emotional regulation has made it possible for test subjects with severe obesity and binge eating disorder to better regulate their food cravings and intake.
What's the story? For some people, an occasional movie night accompanied by junk food can be just part of a fun evening. Unfortunately, however, for some people indulging in highly processed food, it can be anything but fun. It’s because they do so regularly and are unable to stop themselves. For one to three percent of US residents, these eating habits are so entrenched that they meet the criteria for binge eating disorder. Binge eating disorder should not be confused with being overweight or obese. However, for some people being overweight and obese is a result of a binge eating disorder. This is troublesome because it makes it harder for them to eat healthier meals and lose weight.
