A food for thought: how highly processed foods affect our mental health?
In 10 seconds? A recent study found that consuming more highly processed foods and drinks relates to higher depression and anxiety symptoms.
What is the story? Researchers have found the correlation when they studied data from 10,359 US adults who participated in the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Highly processed foods are calorie-rich and high in salts, sugars, and fats, and contribute to the obesity and cardiovascular disease epidemics across the world. But the recent study using NHANES national data shows that consuming more highly processed foods and drinks also relates to a higher chance of poor mental health.
